Giants place Sorgi, Moss on injured reserve

Posted on September 1, 2010 by No Comments

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants decided they couldn’t wait for backup quarterback Jim Sorgi‘s injured right shoulder to get better.

Sorgi, veteran receiver Sinorice Moss and rookie linebacker Adrian Tracy were placed on injured reserve Tuesday as the Giants reached the 75-man roster limit.

Moss has been sidelined most of training camp with groin problems, while Tracy, the team’s sixth-round draft pick, dislocated an elbow Saturday in a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Giants also moved veteran offensive lineman Kevin Boothe from the active physically unable to perform list to reserve PUP and waived rookie free agent receiver Nyan Boateng.

Sorgi, Moss and Tracy will miss the rest of the season. Boothe must sit out at least the first six weeks.

Sorgi, who was signed in the offseason to back up Eli Manning, tore an anterior capsule in his right shoulder Aug. 16 in the preseason opener against the Jets. He has been unable to throw and has not practiced. He indicated on Monday that he knew his season was in trouble.

“I don’t know if their patience is wearing thin, but I’m sure it is,” Sorgi said. “It’s just a numbers game and getting to be that point. Like I said, it’s a tough position for me to be in, and a tough position for them to be in. I don’t really have much else to say.”

Sorgi came to the Giants after backing up Manning’s brother, Peyton, for six seasons in Indianapolis. His last season with the Colts also ended with a shoulder injury, but not the same one.

With Sorgi gone for the year, the backup job falls to second-year pro Rhett Bomar, unless the team signs a veteran.

Moss, who has been with the Giants since 2006, had surgery Tuesday to repair a sports hernia. The operation was performed by Dr. William Meyers at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Moss played in one of the Giants’ first three preseason games and had one catch. He played in eight games in 2009 and 37 in his first five seasons. He has 39 career receptions for 421 yards and three touchdowns.

Tracy had surgery Monday to repair ligament damage. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Hotchkiss at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

The Giants have lost two of their seven draft choices this season. Safety Chad Jones, the third-round pick, was seriously injured in an automobile accident in New Orleans on June 25 and is on the reserve-non-football injury list.

Boothe underwent surgery in the spring to repair a torn pectoral muscle suffered while he was lifting weights.

Boateng caught one pass in three preseason games.

With Manning Already Out, Giants Lose His Backup

Posted on August 19, 2010 by No Comments

ALBANY — The Giants do not know how long quarterback Eli Manning will be unable to wear a helmet because of the stitches in his forehead, but the team will be thin at quarterback for the next few weeks.

The backup Jim Sorgi will miss two to three weeks with a tear in the capsule of his throwing shoulder after a hit he sustained Monday in a preseason game, his agent, Matt Brei, said Thursday in a telephone interview.

Brei did not know the severity of the tear. He said it was not related to the partly torn labrum that forced Sorgi onto injured reserve last season with the Indianapolis Colts. Sorgi was here Thursday and wore a helmet, but he did not participate.

Sorgi sustained the injury on a big hit from Jets linebacker Lance Laury moments after he delivered his second touchdown pass to Victor Cruz in the Giants’ 31-16 win at New Meadowlands Stadium. Manning, who required 12 stitches to close a bloody gash on his forehead after being hit in the game, will be unable to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. His timetable is uncertain. He took snaps Thursday wearing a baseball cap, but did not face a defense.

A CHANCE FOR BOMAR Quarterback Rhett Bomar needed a minute to contemplate the question: Did he remember the last game he started?

“The last game I played?” Bomar said. “It was the last game of college. It was November of … 2008?”

He added, “I think it was against Texas State.”

Bomar will make his next start on Saturday when the Giants take on the Pittsburgh Steelers at New Meadowlands Stadium. Bomar will at least temporarily step into the main role with Eli Manning and the backup Jim Sorgi out. Dominic Randolph, a rookie free agent out of Holy Cross, joined the Giants in training camp Thursday to help shore up their depth at the position. The Giants may also look to safety Antrel Rolle, who took snaps out of the Wildcat while playing for the Arizona CardinalsGIANTS’ PHILLIPS TO RETURN After missing almost all of last season with a knee injury and being limited in training camp after surgery, safety Kenny Phillips will return to live action against the Steelers. Coach Tom Coughlin indicated that Phillips’s time on the field might be limited. Coughlin said Phillips proved he was ready during practices.

HARVIN COLLAPSES AT PRACTICE Percy Harvin experienced the scariest episode yet in a career plagued by migraine headaches when he collapsed at a Minnesota Vikings practice in Eden Prairie, Minn., and was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Coach Brad Childress left team headquarters after practice and spent the rest of the afternoon at the hospital with Harvin, who remained there overnight.

Harvin, who has dealt with migraines most of his life, returned to the field Monday after missing more than two weeks, but at the beginning of Thursday’s workout he experienced another episode that was scary enough for the Vikings to halt practice while he received medical attention.

Soon after returning to practice, Harvin was doubled over and trembling. (AP)

CUSHING’S SUSPENSION UPHELD Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing had his four-game suspension for taking a performance-enhancing drug upheld by the N.F.L., meaning he will not be eligible to play until October. Cushing was suspended in May for testing positive for HCG, a fertility drug that is on the N.F.L.’s banned substances list. Cushing claimed he had a rare medical condition that set off the positive test. (AP)ROOKIE STARS FOR BILLS The first-round draft pick C. J. Spiller ran for 54 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown, and the Buffalo Bills beat the Indianapolis Colts, 34-21, in a preseason game in Toronto. Peyton Manning led two Colts scoring drives, but also threw an interception that Terrence McGee returned 78 yards for a touchdown. (AP)

WELKER RETURNS FOR PATRIOTS Wes Welker, who had 346 catches over the last three years, played for the first time since January as the New England Patriots beat the host Atlanta Falcons, 28-10, in a preseason game. Welker tore knee ligaments in the regular-season finale in January. Tom Brady got him involved right away Thursday, completing passes of 6 and 14 yards on the second and third plays. (AP)

Giants Release WR Burress

Posted on April 3, 2009 by 1 Comment

In a somewhat surprising move the New York Giants released troubled but talented wide receiver Plaxico Burress, four months after accidentally shooting himself in the leg in a New York City night club.  The move leaves the Giants without much at receiver with Amani Toomer possibly not returning to the club as well.

Burress, who had his court date postponed until May 15, has an uphill battle fighting New York City gun charges, with the city being known to have some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

Giants Sign DT Canty

Posted on March 1, 2009 by No Comments

The New York Giants added another impressive piece to their dominant defensive line, with the signing of former Cowboys lineman Chris Canty to a six year $42 million contract.

With the additions of Canty and Rocky Bernard to the already dominating Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck, the Giants defense should be expected to be one of the most dominating in the league.
