The Long Road for Rex Ryan

Posted on December 29, 2010 by No Comments

For Rex Ryan, the season wasn’t supposed to go like this. Winning a Super Bowl was the goal, and there was sure to be hardship along the way, but never like this. Never with the kind of scrutiny and pressure that the New York Jets have felt, but for Ryan, he shouldn’t have expected anything else.

His vaunted New York Jets defense, led by the superb play of Darrell Revis, took the Jets to the AFC Championship game. There his fast paced, blitz all day scheme was dissected by Peyton Manning. This year the offense was supposed to mature, most notably quarterback Mark Sanchez, and the Jets were supposed to represent the AFC.

Still, the road to get there, whether the result was achieved or not, was never an easy road. From the early predictions, to the late season struggles of Sanchez, the Jets limped into the playoffs more than they strutted in. The question was starting to be brought up with Rex Ryan that his father got so often: was he a good football coach, or just a good coordinator?

But you have to give credit to Rex Ryan for dealing with something his father never had to deal with: a media scandal. In the latter weeks of the regular season, reports, pictures, and videos surfaced of Ryans wife on the Internet. She was outed as having a food fetish. It appeared that Rex himself was also into the fetish, if only for his wife’s benefit.

Still, Ryan handled the incident like a professional and what it did was take the focus off of his team. In the first round Ryan and his Jets beat Peyton Manning. This was something Ryan had never been able to do. It’s been a long season, but Rex Ryan is really proving himself.

More Free Agency Signings

Posted on February 27, 2009 by No Comments

A few more free agency signings from a busy opening day…

Starting quarterback Kerry Collins re-signs with the Tennessee Titans. A good move for both Collins and the team. Unless a desperate team needed to break the bank, a 2 year 15 million deal for the aging veteran is a good haul for Collins.

Steelers guard Chris Kemoeatu spurned an offer from the the New York Jets and signed a $20 million, five year deal to remain with the Super Bowl champions.

The Denver Broncos filled their running back need by signing signed Correll Buckhalter and JJ Arrington to presumably split time next season. Just when fantasy owners thought the Denver running back situation may clear up.
