The Future of Carson Palmer

Posted on January 11, 2011 by No Comments

This offseason is about finding a place for some of the NFL’s most talked about quarterbacks. Everyone knows that the quarterback is the most important position on the football field, however, there are plenty of quarterbacks that are displaced these days and will be looking for a new home, so lets take a look at these quarterbacks and see where their future might lie.

Carson Palmer

The Bengals QB is still under contract to his team, but he is considering retirement if they don’t trade him. It’s impossible to say whether he is the problem in Cincinnati or if the Bengals are, but both have been very bad at time. So, the thinking here is that he’d be best off someplace else. Putting him on a team like Seattle where he can team up with his college coach Pete Carroll would be a very good idea for him. If he could handle the discipline then the Carolina Panthers would be a good fit.

Carolina has a ton of draft picks and so they could meet the demand for Palmer. This could work out for the Bengals who have the fourth pick in the draft and at least four quarterbacks who could be ready in the next season.

The Bengals have a big decision to make as far as Palmers future, but the fact is that something needs to change and it needs to change quickly. So, if the Bengals aren’t interested in firing Marvin Lewis, then they need to be interested in saying hello to the possibility of life without Carson Palmer.

The Curious Case of Carson Palmer

Posted on January 2, 2011 by No Comments

The time might be right to say a hearty so long to the once promising, but now totally disappointing Carson Palmer. Very few quarterbacks have had the kind of start that Palmer has had, with the kind of finish he is making for himself. In a recent loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback threw three interceptions, two of which were taken to the house for touchdowns. It’s unfortunate the timing of those interceptions because there was a point when the Bengals looked as if they could win that game.

Carson Palmer came into the NFL the right way. He was a highly regarded quarterback from USC looking to make a name for himself in the NFL. The Bengals drafted him and made him watch and wait. It’s often a preferred method for most teams when dealing with quarterbacks, but in the case of Carson Palmer it appeared to pay off in spades. He had gotten a hold of the game and the speed of the offense and was ready to make a play and get them deep into the post season. However, something happened that wasn’t to be expected. In a first round game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Palmer tore his knee and couldn’t finish.

Since that time Palmer has been a lot of things to the Bengals, but a saving grace hasn’t been one of them. He’s been terribly disappointing. The Bengals as a team have struggled to stay relevant and therefore might need to think about making a quarterback change before they can consider themselves important again in the AFC. It’s a shame that Palmer hasn’t shown more but the Bengals can’t wait around forever. It appears the ship has sailed to being a consistently good quarterback and Palmer just missed it.

The Cincinnati Bengals are actively shopping offensive lineman Levi Jones, an 8 year veteran who has battled injuries for the last few seasons. It is believed that if the team can not find a deal he will be released.

The Arizona Cardinals have re-signed linebacker Clark Haggans to a three year deal. The 10 year veteran played in 11 games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

The Washington Redskins signed defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn, who formerly played for the team from 2002 through 2005. Wynn was a backup on the Giants last season and played for the Saints in 2007.

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed cornerback Fernando Bryant and offensive lineman Trai Essex to one and two year deals respectively.

Updating the Laveranues Coles contract details, the Bengals have guaranteed him $9.75 million for 2009, which is far more than the Jets would have paid him prior to his release.

The remainder of the contract pays Coles a $3 million signing bonus (spread out over four years) and a $4.7 million roster bonus.  Coles’ base salary will be approximately $1.9 million per year and there are various other incentives worked in to the deal.
