Warner Undergoes Hip Surgery

Posted on March 18, 2009 by No Comments

Cardinals quarterback underwent arthroscopic hip surgery to clean up a condition he played with at the end of 2008. The surgery was performed by Dr. Marc Phillipon, the same doctor who performed a surgery a few weeks ago on baseball star Alex Rodriguez. Warner’s recovery time is said to be quick and it is unlikely he misses anything other than off-season workouts.

Ravens Release Rolle Sign Carr

Posted on March 18, 2009 by No Comments

In a not so surprising move, the Baltimore Ravens officially released cornerback and signed cornerback who will likely also act as the team’s kick returner.

Carr played last season for the Tennessee Titans and registered 82 tackles and averaged close to 25 yards per kick return. Rolle, an 11 year veteran, has battled injuries the last few seasons but will likely draw interest from some team in need of secondary help.

Possible Landing Spots For Jay Cutler

Posted on March 18, 2009 by No Comments

Off the top of my head some possible landing spots for if this whole situation goes from bad to worse…

Tampa Bay Bucs – Tons of cap room thanks to the recent purge of veterans with large contracts would allow for a restructured deal.

New York Jets – Have been looking for a quarterback since Namath left, though if rumors of a trade have him rattled how will he handle the New York media?

Houston Texans – The Texans already have Matt Schaub but he has never shown the ability to stay healthy. Head coach Gary Kubiak was a former coordinator in Denver so the system is similar.

Chicago Bears – The Bears have been searching for a quarterback almost as long as the Jets and while Kyle Orton had his moments last season he isn’t the long term answer. Cutler has the arm strength to play in windy Soldier Field.

Buffalo Bills – They took on Terrell Owens and they haven’t been ranked higher than 25th offensively since 2002.

Minnesota Vikings – They just traded for Sage Rosenfels but Brad Childress has a job to think about and Cutler would be a significant improvement on a team that desperately needs quarterback help.

Detroit Lions – They have the draft picks and a great receiving corps. Trading for Cutler would make more sense than drafting a quarterback and make life much easier for new coach Jim Schwartz.

Cleveland Browns – This has been rumored but with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn tying up a significant amount of cap space I really don’t see it happening.

San Francisco 49ers – The 49ers just restructured the contract of Alex Smith and have a three way battle for their starter. If you have three quarterbacks you really have none so Cutler would make a good fit.

Chiefs Sign Engram To Bolster WR Corps

Posted on March 18, 2009 by No Comments

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Seattle Seahawk to a deal, the terms of which have not yet been disclosed.  Engram will give newly acquired quarterback Matt Cassel another reliable target to go along with Dwayne Bowe and gives the locker room some veteran presence, something it was sorely lacking the past couple of seasons.

LJ Smith Likely To Sign With Baltimore

Posted on March 18, 2009 by No Comments

The Baltimore Ravens are reportedly close to bringing in former Eagles tight end LJ Smth to help boost their passing game.  The Ravens had a need at tight end with former star Todd Heap disappointing each of the last few seasons while battling injuries but Smith has battled numerous injuries of his own.  Still the move gives second year quarterback Joe Flacco another short range target to help in his development.

Tuesday News Round Up

Posted on March 17, 2009 by No Comments

The Cincinnati Bengals are actively shopping offensive lineman , an 8 year veteran who has battled injuries for the last few seasons. It is believed that if the team can not find a deal he will be released.

The Arizona Cardinals have re-signed linebacker to a three year deal. The 10 year veteran played in 11 games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

The Washington Redskins signed defensive lineman , who formerly played for the team from 2002 through 2005. Wynn was a backup on the Giants last season and played for the Saints in 2007.

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed cornerback and offensive lineman to one and two year deals respectively.

Bills RB Lynch Meets With Commissioner

Posted on March 17, 2009 by No Comments

Buffalo Bills running back met with NFL commissioner about his recent misdemeanor gun charge, and apparently discussed whether or not a suspension or some other form of punishment is in order for Lynch.

The charge was Lynch’s second in less than a year after being involved in a hit and run incident prior to last season. Lynch avoided suspension for being a first time offender but the commissioner doesn’t take kindly to players who embarrass the league and a suspension or fine this time around is very likely.

Browns Sign Tackle St. Clair

Posted on March 17, 2009 by No Comments

The Cleveland Browns signed former Bears tackle to a three year, $9 million deal that includes just $600,000 in guaranteed money.  The move helps bolster Cleveland’s offensive  line that regressed from two years ago when they were regarded as one of the league’s best.

Peppers To Be Traded To Patriots?

Posted on March 16, 2009 by No Comments

NFL.com’s Vic Carucci is reporting that the New England Patriots are rumored to be trading the 34th overall pick (the second rounder they received from Kansas City in the Matt Cassell trade) to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for defensive end .

Peppers was disgruntled and asked to be traded after being franchised by the team, and it appears he will get his wish.  The Patriots need a contingency plan for defensive ends Richard Seymour and Ty Warren who both become free agents after this season.  Peppers will likely be listed as an outside linebacker but will have his hand on the ground quite often in the Patriots hybrid 3-4 system.

Jaguars Release Troubled WR Matt Jones

Posted on March 16, 2009 by No Comments

The Jacksonville Jaguars released former first round wide receiver after he was arrested for violating parole stemming from his 2008 drug related arrest.  Jones failed a drug and alcohol screening last week after drinking beer during a round of golf.

Jones struggled through most of his career but posted his best season to date catching 65 passes for 761 yards and two touchdowns.  Jones could find his way to another roster based on talent, however a suspension from the league is very likely.
